In a dust bowl town in the American Badlands, the Connell family are grieving the loss of one of their daughters, North Dakota.

Annie Connell’s brood of seven children, each named after the states she once longed to visit, has been reduced to six. Her austere mother cannot understand her pain, and her restless husband Frank must confront his failings as a father if he hopes to keep his family together. North’s twin sister, South Dakota, is distraught and begins a desperate search to find her missing other half.

As Annie sinks below her grief, a stranger comes to the guest house where she lives and works. This mysterious guest leads Annie through her pain and away from her home and family. Having lost her identity as a women by staying trapped in one place, in a life she didn’t intend, how can Annie reconcile who she wanted to be with who she became, and who she is now after her daughter’s death?

Meanwhile the rest of the family must find their own ways of overcoming the destruction of grief, uncovering their new identities, their means of escape, and their rays of hope along the way.
